How long will the treatment last?
Your first session includes a consultation, assessment and treatment which usually takes around 90 minutes. You should allow 40 - 60 minutes for additional treatments.
What should I wear?
Most treatments can be performed through light clothing, preferably without pockets. Leggings, t-shirts and jogging bottoms or shorts are best, alternatively you may like to fetch pyjamas to change into. You will always be covered with blankets throughout your treatment which are usually performed with the client laid down on a treatment bed, however if this is too uncomfortable then it can also be done with the client seated.
What is it like?
Bowen Therapy is unlike any other treatment that you will have experienced. It's roots share some Osteopathic, Chiropractic & acupressure principles, however it cannot be likened to any of those modalities. The whole body is assessed to ascertain where dysfunction may be coming from, then a series of small gentle rolling movements will implemented on specifically chosen areas of the body. These moves are made with fingers and thumbs and generally gentle yet precise. Bowen is deeply relaxing and often people fall asleep during the session.
How many treatments will I need?
It is recommended that 3 sessions should take place over a period of 3 - 4 weeks in order to work the body as a whole to create structural change within the soft tissues. It should be noted that this can vary and every client is treated for their individual requirements. Bowen initially should be considered as a course of sessions which aims to restore function, however many choose to come back for individual sessions to maintain the bodies balance, and quite frankly because they enjoy the benefits of deep relaxation that Bowen provides.
Can Bowen be used alongside other therapies?
It is recommended that no other therapies should take place during your course of treatments and 7 days afterwards such as reflexology, chiropractic, osteopathy, acupuncture, Reiki, massage etc to ensure that the body is not overloaded with information & does not interfere with the efficacy as the bodies natural response continues to adjust after the work has been done. However, Bowen therapy is not a substitute for medical treatment and any recommendation by your Doctor should be adhered to. A Bowen therapist does not diagnose, prescribe or alter medication.
